Are hidden photos encrypted on iPhone?

Hiding a photo moves it to a locked collection. It adds no encryption of its own. What protects hidden photos, and what would add more.

Hiding adds no extra encryption. Hidden photos have the same protection as the rest of your library: device encryption on the phone, and iCloud encryption if you sync. The Hidden collection is locked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, so anyone who knows your passcode can open it.

The word Hidden suggests more than the feature does. It removes pictures from the places people normally look. That is useful, and it is a separate thing from encryption.

What protects a hidden photo

A lock on the collection. Apple says Hidden is locked by default and opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. If you turned that off in Settings, it opens freely.

Device encryption. A passcode turns on data protection for the whole phone. This covers all your photos equally, whether hidden or not.

iCloud encryption. With iCloud Photos on, hiding applies on all your devices. Hidden items follow your account’s setting: Apple-held keys by default, or end-to-end with Advanced Data Protection. Apple notes that the hidden flag itself remains under standard protection.

What that means in real life

If you want a separate secret

Encrypting a photo with a key your passcode cannot reach requires an app built for it. Backroom encrypts each file with AES-256-GCM using a random key for each vault, and your pattern unlocks that key. That has costs: nobody can recover a vault if you lose both the pattern and the 12-word phrase, and there is no sync to your other devices. Backroom has also not had an outside review yet. Here is the comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone get into Hidden with just my passcode?

Apple says you unlock the collection using Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. So yes.

Can I set a different password for the Hidden album?

No. It uses your device unlock. See our guide on changing the Hidden album password.

Does a vault app do better?

An encrypted vault adds a second secret. Check that it names its encryption and tells you what happens if you forget the secret, since many only hide files behind a PIN screen.
