Features
What Backroom does, and where each feature stops. Coming soon to the App Store.
Opening your vault
Pattern lock: draw to open your vault
Backroom opens with a pattern on a 5 by 5 grid, separate from your iPhone passcode. How strength works, and what a pattern can and cannot stop.
Multiple vaults, one pattern for each
A different pattern opens a different vault, and the app shows no list. Keep ordinary photos under one pattern and private ones under another.
Recovery phrase: 12 words on paper
Each vault has a 12-word phrase, used if you forget your pattern or move to a new iPhone. Nobody else has it, so keep it safe.
Keeping files encrypted
Encryption: how Backroom protects your files
AES-256-GCM on each file, a random key for each vault and a slow key derivation for your pattern. The design in plain terms, including what it leaves exposed.
No account, no analytics, no ads
Backroom has no sign-up, no servers and no tracking. What that gives you, what it costs you and what Apple still handles.
Locks when you leave
The vault locks when the app goes to the background and shows a blank screen when you flip between open apps, so nothing is on display.
Adding what you want to keep
Import photos and files
Copy from your Photo Library or Files into a vault. Backroom checks the copy, then offers to delete the originals, with Apple's confirmation.
In-app camera
Take a photo inside a vault and it goes straight in, encrypted, without touching your camera roll. It takes still photos only.
Locked notes
Write notes inside a vault, encrypted the same way as your photos. How they compare with Apple's locked notes, and their limits.
Paid plan
App icons: six disguises for your Home Screen
On the paid plan, change Backroom's icon to a calculator, ruler, level, printer, compass or scanner. The name under the icon stays Backroom.
Calculator screen
On the paid plan, Backroom can open to a working calculator. Type your code and press equals to reach the pattern screen. Try a demo here.
Free and paid plans
The free plan holds 50 photos and files, 5 videos and 10 notes in each vault. Paid adds unlimited items, alternate icons and the calculator screen.
