Multiple vaults, one pattern for each
A different pattern opens a different vault, and the app shows no list. Keep ordinary photos under one pattern and private ones under another.
Each pattern opens its own vault, with its own key and recovery phrase. Backroom keeps no visible list of vaults, so someone who opens one sees only that vault. You can keep ordinary pictures under one pattern and private ones under another. A forensic examination could still estimate how much data the app stores.
Sometimes someone demands to look. A boss, a partner, a parent. An app that reveals everything or nothing leaves you little room. Separate vaults give you a third option.
How it works
Draw a new pattern and Backroom offers to make a vault. The same app holds them all, and nothing on screen lists them. The new-vault screen reads the same on every phone, whether or not others exist.
A sensible setup is a first vault with real but dull pictures, kept ready to open, and a second with the private ones.
What someone sees
Opening one vault shows that vault’s items. Its settings are its own. The storage screen in iOS shows the app’s total size, which might seem larger than one small vault would explain.
Honest limits
The app has no list, but the phone’s storage does hold evidence. An examiner with the files can count vault folders and see that an opened vault accounts for only part of the data. So do not rely on this if someone is able to take your phone to a lab, and do not rely on it in a dangerous situation where being caught lying could hurt you. It works best against someone casually checking.
Vaults stay separate in every way. Each has its own recovery phrase to look after, and a forgotten pattern on a vault you rarely open is easy to do. Write each one down.
Frequently asked questions
How many vaults can I make?
There is no cap. Free plan limits apply to each vault, so nothing about the limit gives away that others exist.
Is this a duress mode?
No. Backroom has no duress mode. Nothing is deleted or triggered by a pattern. A second vault simply opens instead.
Can I share one vault and keep others?
Backroom has no sharing feature. If you give someone a pattern, they can open that vault on your phone, and only that vault.
