In-app camera

Take a photo inside a vault and it goes straight in, encrypted, without touching your camera roll. It takes still photos only.

Backroom's camera saves a photo directly to the vault you have open, so it never reaches your camera roll or iCloud Photos. You can retake it before you keep it. It takes still photos. For video, record with the regular Camera and import the clip.

Using the regular Camera then moving the picture means there is always a moment when it sits in your library, and maybe starts uploading to iCloud. Taking it inside the vault skips that.

How it works

Open a vault, tap add and tap Camera. Take the photo and choose Keep or Retake. Kept photos are encrypted into that vault. Nothing is written to your camera roll.

Good uses

Limits

Your screen and pictures are only as private as your surroundings. The file stays on this iPhone, so it needs a backup if you cannot lose it. Save a copy later moves it into normal storage, which brings back everything you avoided.

Frequently asked questions

Does it record video?

No. The in-app camera takes still photos only.

Do photos taken in Backroom have location data?

The app does not ask for location permission, so it has no location to add.

What about a camera permission?

iOS asks once. If you turn it off, the app tells you to turn it back on in Settings.
