Import photos and files

Copy from your Photo Library or Files into a vault. Backroom checks the copy, then offers to delete the originals, with Apple's confirmation.

Add from your Photo Library or Files. Backroom encrypts a copy and checks that it decrypts correctly. After an import from Photos, it can ask Apple to delete the originals. Apple shows its own confirmation, and deleted items stay in Recently Deleted for about 30 days. Originals in Files stay until you remove them.

From your Photo Library

Open a vault, tap add and choose Photo Library. Pick what you want. Each item is encrypted to a staging area, decrypted again and compared before it is committed, so a failed import leaves you with no half-finished file and an untouched original.

When it finishes, Backroom offers to delete the originals. The copies in Photos remain until you agree. With iCloud Photos on, deleting them also removes them from your other devices.

From Files

Tap Files and pick your documents, or anything else. Backroom copies them and never deletes the source. Remove it yourself once you have checked the copy.

After import

Finish the job by clearing Recently Deleted in Photos. The guide has the whole order, and it covers other copies you may have forgotten.

You can search a vault by name. The free plan holds 50 photos and files, and 5 videos, in each vault. If a vault reaches the limit, Backroom tells you, and the items it did not import stay as they were.

Frequently asked questions

Does Backroom need access to all my photos?

The picker shows only what you choose. Backroom asks for Photos access only when you ask it to delete originals.

What file types can I import?

From Files, any file type. Photos and videos display in the app, and other files open through Save a copy.

What about Live Photos?

The import takes the image or video file the picker hands over. We have not tested whether the motion part of a Live Photo is kept, so try one first if it matters.
