Can someone see your Recently Deleted photos?
Deleted photos stay for 30 days, behind the same lock as Hidden. How to remove them for good and what happens with iCloud and a Recovered collection.
Yes, for 30 days, if they can unlock your phone. Recently Deleted is locked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode by default, so anyone with that code gets in. To remove items now, open the collection, tap Select, choose the items, tap the More button and tap Delete.
Deleting a photo gives it a 30-day holiday. People forget this, and a partner, a parent or a repair technician may not.
Remove them now
- In Photos, tap Collections.
- Tap Recently Deleted (below Utilities), tap View Album and unlock.
- Tap Select, then choose items.
- Tap the More button, then Delete.
Apple’s iPhone guide says these actions can apply across your devices when you use iCloud Photos.
Keep the lock on
Settings, Apps, Photos: leave Use Face ID, Touch ID or Passcode on. It covers Recently Deleted and Hidden. Turn it off and both open freely.
Other places to check
- Recovered. Under Utilities. Deleting from here is permanent.
- A backup. A computer or iCloud backup may hold what you later deleted. More on backups.
- Your other devices. They should update once they sync.
If you just moved photos to a vault
This is the step people skip. Backroom’s import leaves originals in Photos until you agree to delete them, and those remain in Recently Deleted for about 30 days. Clear them there when you are sure the vault copy works.
Frequently asked questions
Are they gone from iCloud?
When you delete from Recently Deleted, Apple says they are removed permanently from your iPhone, iCloud and other devices on your Apple Account.
What is the Recovered collection?
Apple says if a photo was not saved properly and could not be added to your library, you may find a copy in Recovered, under Utilities. Check there too.
Can deleted photos be recovered with special software?
We make no promise on that. Flash storage can retain deleted data at a low level, protected by iOS file encryption, and specialist tools are outside what we can test.
