Hidden album not showing on iPhone

The album may be turned off in Settings, moved in a redesigned Photos app or signed in to a different account.

Open Settings, tap Apps, tap Photos and turn on Show Hidden Album. Then open Photos, tap Collections, scroll to Utilities and tap Hidden. If the album is empty, check that you are signed in to the right Apple Account and that iCloud Photos is on.

A missing Hidden album usually comes down to a setting or a layout you did not expect. Your photos are most likely still there. Work through these in order.

Turn the album back on

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then tap Photos. On iOS 17 or earlier, Photos is directly in Settings.
  3. Turn on Show Hidden Album.

Apple says that with this off, hidden photos won’t be visible anywhere in the Photos app. It is an easy switch to flip and forget, and it is on by default on iPhone and iPad.

Look in the right place

Apple’s newer Photos layout uses Collections. Open Photos, tap Collections and scroll down until you find the Utilities section. Tap Hidden, tap View Album and unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

On a Mac, the album is off by default. In Photos, choose View, then Show Hidden Photo Album, and look under Utilities in the sidebar. On iPad, you may need to tap the sidebar icon first.

If the album opens but looks empty

Check the account. Open Settings and read the email under your name. Your hidden photos follow the Apple Account that hid them.

Check iCloud Photos. Tap your name in Settings, then iCloud, then Photos, and make sure Sync this iPhone is on. Apple says you may need Wi-Fi and a few minutes before photos appear.

Check your library view. If you use an iCloud Shared Photo Library, some items appear only in certain views. Apple’s support page explains how to choose Both Libraries, Personal Library or Shared Library.

Check Recently Deleted. Deleted items stay for 30 days. Tap Collections, then Recently Deleted under Utilities, then View Album. Also look for a Recovered collection, which Apple mentions for items missing from Recently Deleted.

Try iCloud.com. Sign in, open Photos, select Hidden in the sidebar and choose Show Hidden Photos. If the photos show there, the problem is on the phone. If you have Advanced Data Protection on, web access to your data is off until you turn it on.

After a new phone or a restore

Photos may take a while to download after you sign in on a new phone, depending on library size and connection. If you were not using iCloud Photos, your hidden photos were stored only on the old device or in its backup, so restoring that backup is the place to look.

Unhide what you find

Open the Hidden album, tap the photo, tap the More button and tap Unhide. It returns to your library. If you were trying to get photos out for good, read how to hide photos on iPhone for the basics or the iCloud guide on where hidden photos are stored.

If you did not turn the album off and suspect someone else did, change your passcode and read someone has seen your passcode. The same Settings switch is open to anyone who has your code.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Hidden album on iPhone?

In Photos, tap Collections and scroll down to Utilities. Hidden is listed there when Show Hidden Album is on.

Why does the Hidden album ask for Face ID?

It is locked by default. You can change this in Settings, under Apps, then Photos, by turning off Use Face ID, Use Touch ID or Use Passcode.

How do I change the Hidden album password?

Apple's guides describe no separate password for the album. It opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode. Changing your passcode changes what opens it.

Can I create a second hidden album?

Apple's guides describe one Hidden collection. Hiding a photo sends it there, and you cannot view it anywhere else in Photos.
