Blur faces in a photo, without uploading it

Pixelate a face, a plate or a tattoo in your browser and download a new PNG with no metadata. You mark each face by hand, and the file stays on your device.

Choose a photo, leave Pixelate selected and drag a box over each face. The tool paints large blocks over those areas and writes a new PNG, so the original pixels are gone from that copy. Nothing is uploaded. For anything that must stay unreadable, such as text, switch to solid black.

Before you post

Look past the face. Tattoos, a school logo, a name badge and a car plate identify people too. Cover those as well.

Zoom in on the download to check the edges. A box drawn too small can leave part of a face visible.

If you are posting children, people at a protest or someone at risk, ask whether the picture needs to go up at all. EFF warns that people identifiable in protest photos can be tracked down and harassed.

Frequently asked questions

Is pixelating safe?

Researchers have recovered text from pixelated images, and EFF notes that blurring can sometimes be reversed. Use solid black if a face or detail really must not be identified.

Why no automatic face detection?

It is not widely available in browsers, and an automatic pass can miss someone. You mark each face, then check the result.

Does it remove location data?

Yes, for the copy it makes. The result is a new PNG containing pixels only.
