Photo redactor: cover faces, plates and text
Pixelate a face or black out text in a photo or screenshot, then download a new PNG with no metadata. Nothing is uploaded.
Choose an image, pick solid black or pixelate, and drag across each thing you want covered. The tool paints a new PNG with those areas replaced, so the original pixels are gone from that copy. You choose every area by hand, and the file stays on your device.
Before you share a screenshot
Look at the edges first. Notification banners, browser tabs, account names and the clock tend to give away more than the main content. Cover those too, or crop them with the image cropper.
Check the finished copy
Open the downloaded PNG and zoom in on each area. A box drawn slightly too small can leave the top of a letter or the edge of a house number showing.
The result is a fresh PNG. It carries no EXIF or location data from the original, and it will usually be larger than a JPEG of the same picture.
What stays visible
A covered face can still leave clothing, tattoos, a room or a voice in a video. If you are protecting someone’s identity, think about the whole frame.
Frequently asked questions
Which is safer, pixelate or solid black?
Solid black. Researchers have recovered text from pixelated and blurred images. Pixelate works for a face in a crowd, while passwords, card numbers and addresses should get solid black.
Does it find faces automatically?
No. Browser face detection is not widely available, and an automatic pass can miss someone. You mark each area yourself and check the result.
Can someone undo the black box?
Not from the file this tool makes, since the covered pixels are replaced before the PNG is written. Your original file is unchanged, so keep it private or delete it.
