Image compressor with a size limit

Shrink a photo to under 100 KB, 200 KB or any size limit. Compare the sizes and download the result, with no upload.

Choose an image and set a limit in KB. The tool searches for the highest JPEG or WebP quality that fits, and it scales the picture down only if quality alone cannot get there. The result has no metadata, and your file stays on your device.

How it finds the size

JPEG and WebP trade detail for size through a quality setting. The tool tries a range of settings, keeps the best one under your limit and checks that the result opens correctly. Set the limit to 0 to pick a quality by hand instead.

What to expect

Busy pictures, such as foliage or crowds, need more bytes than smooth ones. Compressing an already compressed file a second time adds new artifacts, so start from the original when you can.

Metadata goes too

The browser draws your picture to a blank canvas and encodes that canvas, so EXIF and location data do not carry over. The color profile does not either, and wide-color photos may shift slightly.

Frequently asked questions

What size limit should I use?

Check what the form or site asks for. For a photo that only needs to look good on a phone, 200 KB is often plenty.

Why did the picture get smaller in pixels?

If the lowest quality setting still misses your limit, the tool reduces the dimensions and tries again. The status line tells you when this happens.

Can I compress a PNG and keep it PNG?

This tool writes JPEG or WebP, since PNG has no quality setting to lower. Transparent areas turn white in a JPEG, so choose WebP to keep them.
