Passphrase generator

Generate a random, memorable passphrase from the EFF word list using your browser's secure random numbers. Nothing is sent or stored.

The generator picks words at random from the 7,776-word EFF long list, using your browser's cryptographic random number generator. Six words give about 78 bits of randomness. The passphrase exists only on this page until you copy it.

Why random words work

The strength of a passphrase comes from how many options the generator had. With 7,776 possible words, every extra word multiplies the possibilities by 7,776, which adds about 12.9 bits. An attacker who knows the word list and your settings still has to search all of them.

Sentences you make up yourself feel random, and they follow patterns that cracking tools already know. Letting the computer choose avoids that.

How the words get picked

The tool asks crypto.getRandomValues for a 32-bit number and throws away any value that would favor some words over others. That keeps every word equally likely.

Keeping it safe

Put it in a password manager, or write it down and store the paper somewhere safe. Avoid sending it to yourself by email or chat. A passphrase is meant for one account, so generate a new one for the next.

Frequently asked questions

How many words should I use?

Six is a sound default for a password manager's main password or a disk encryption key. Use more for something an attacker could test offline for years.

Can I swap a word I dislike?

Generate a fresh set instead. Picking your favorites out of several results cuts the randomness, though a single re-roll does little harm.

Is this the same as a Backroom recovery phrase?

No. Each Backroom vault creates its own 12-word recovery phrase inside the app. This page is a separate tool for passwords elsewhere, and it has no link to any vault.

Where do the words come from?

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's long word list, used under its Creative Commons Attribution license. The list is bundled into the page, so generating needs no network.
