Pattern strength checker

Draw a pattern on a 5 by 5 grid and see how hard it is to guess. Uses the same rating as the Backroom app, and nothing leaves your device.

Drag across the dots to draw a pattern. The checker rates it Too short, Weak, Fair or Strong based on its length and how the path moves, using the same rules as the Backroom app. Practice with a pattern similar to your real one, since someone could be watching your screen.

How the rating works

Every pattern starts with its first dot. Each later move adds to a score: more for a new direction or a long jump, and less for continuing straight. A pattern under 6 dots is too short for Backroom to accept, whatever its score.

Backroom uses a 5 by 5 grid with 25 dots. Dots cannot repeat, and the order matters, so a pattern drawn backward opens a different vault.

Habits that weaken a pattern

People tend to start in a corner, draw letters and follow the edges. An L, a Z or a square feels memorable because it is simple, which also makes it an early guess. Try starting away from the corners and crossing your own path.

Remember it first

Backroom has no way to reset a pattern. A vault’s 12-word recovery phrase is the only way back in if you forget, so draw a new pattern several times from memory before you rely on it.

The rules on this page come from the app’s own pattern code, ported to run in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a pattern strong?

Length and changes of direction. Each new direction adds more to the score than carrying on in a straight line, and a move to a distant dot adds more than a move to a neighbor.

Why does crossing a dot add it automatically?

A straight move over an unused dot collects that dot, so the pattern comes out the same however fast your finger moves. The Backroom app works this way too.

Does a Strong rating mean nobody can get in?

No. The rating is an estimate of how people draw, and it is no measurement of security. Someone can watch you draw it, read smudges on the screen or pressure you to open it.

Does this tool store my pattern?

No. It stays in the page's memory and disappears when you clear it or close the tab.
