PNG to WebP converter

Convert a PNG to a smaller WebP that keeps its transparency. The conversion runs in your browser with no upload.

Choose a PNG, set the quality and press Convert. The browser encodes a WebP that keeps transparency and is usually smaller, and the status line shows the exact size change. Safari cannot write WebP files, so use Chrome or Firefox on a computer for this one.

When WebP helps

Screenshots and graphics saved as PNG can be large. WebP often shrinks them a lot with little visible change, which helps web pages load faster. Keep the PNG if you plan to edit the image again.

What carries over

Transparency stays. EXIF, text notes and other metadata in the PNG do not carry into the new file.

Frequently asked questions

Is the result lossless?

Browsers do not offer a guaranteed lossless WebP setting through this method. At full quality the change is very hard to see, though the file is not an exact pixel copy.

Why does it fail in Safari?

Safari can display WebP but cannot encode it from a web page. The tool checks what the browser actually produced and shows an error, so you never get a mislabeled file.

Can a WebP come out bigger?

Yes, sometimes, with tiny or already well-optimized PNG files. Keep whichever file is smaller.
